American Martens - Site Map
American Martens are small animals from the weasel family. It is believed that Martens appeared in Northern America about 60,000 years ago. They were well distributed across the territory of the modern United States and Canada until colonization when extensive trapping diminished their populations.
American Martens are solitary animals that may be seen together only during the breeding season or at the time of rearing the young. Actually, they do not tolerate the presence of same sexed Martens on their territory. When meeting one, American Martens use vocalization to show that the intruder is not welcomed. Baring of teeth, growling, hissing, and huffing are the signs of undisguised hostility.
American Martens are not on the endangered species list in either the United States or Canada. Yet, small population size in some areas has made the authorities of some states and provinces pay special attention to the species.
American Martens are not often seen in the wild. They are nocturnal and are most active at daybreak or closer to night. Their mysterious lifestyle has caused some misconceptions as to their habits.
